4 must-have devices to ensure maximum home protection
Circuit breakers
The purpose of a circuit breaker is to protect your wiring under fault condition or when current is drawing more than the rated circuit breaker. Circuit breakers are chosen on the size of the cable, the length of the run and whether or not insulation is located around the wiring. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to replace fuse wires on your own as this can easily lead to the wire being over rated causing the fuse not to blow when a fault occurs.
RCD – Residual Current Device
An RCD, or Residual Current Device, is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as cutting through a bare wire whilst mowing the lawn. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers simply cannot provide.
Arc Fault Protection
A new addition to electrical home safety devices is the Arc Fault Protection device. These soon to be compulsory devices are effective at protecting your home and family in the event of an unknown short circuit by being able to accurately detect electric arcs that regular circuit breakers are simply incapable of detecting. These incredibly sensitive devices are specifically designed to detect and react only to dangerous electrical arcs thereby eliminating the inconvenience of nuisance tripping.
For a free quote on one of these devices for your home simply send us a photo of your existing switchboard and we will give you an estimate. For final pricing one of our reputable Auckland electricians will visit your home, conduct a pre-start check and then confirm pricing.
Surge Protection
A surge protection device will act to protect all of your electrical appliances in the event of a sudden and unexpected electrical surge due to a lightning strike, power surge, voltage spike or extreme weather.
Relatively inexpensive (around $150), surge protection devices will protect your electrical appliances from damage, thereby potentially saving you thousands of dollars in the event of a power surge.
