Don’t get fooled by cowboys, choose a registered electrician. Electrical work is amongst the most dangerous jobs to undertake in the home. By hiring someone who isn’t up to the job, the results can be catastrophic. Lately, two electricians, in Auckland and Porirua, got fined for carrying out electrical work and not being registered.
Electrical work can be dangerous and complex. Undertaking electrical work yourself can impact on your insurance. And hiring someone without electrical qualifications can cost you your money and your safety.
You can check if an Electrician is NZ registered by visiting the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) and entering their name into the public search.
To gain licencing with the EWRB, Electricians need to complete the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering – Electrician for Registration (Level 4) and the National Certificate in Electricity Supply–Electrician (Level 4).
If an electrician cannot provide the requested licence, they are more than likely unregistered.
You can check to see if they are a Master Electrician. Master Electricians is the professional trade organisation for electrical contracting businesses in New Zealand. Electricians operating under the Master Electricians brand can safeguard the ability of workmanship, providing extra assurance to customers.
Check out the Electricians website for testimonials from other customers. You can also find reviews on Google Business, Facebook, and other social media channels that customers submit.
Getting recommendations from a person you trust, such as a family member or friend, is always a great idea when choosing any tradesperson.
Visit their website or social media and see what type of work they have completed in the past.
It is a great idea to get at least 3 quotes. Ask that they give you a breakdown of pricing, and this will make it easier to compare to the other quotes. Make sure you communicate exactly what work you require and the fittings and materials you would like to use. AB Electrical has an excellent showroom in Browns Bay to help you make your decisions.
