Genesis Energy Calls for a Ban on Incandescent Light Bulbs

9 July 2026

As electricity prices continue to rise, more New Zealand homeowners are looking for practical ways to reduce their power bills. One of the simplest and most effective changes you can make is upgrading your home lighting to modern LED technology.

Recently, Genesis Energy, New Zealand's second-largest electricity retailer with more than 500,000 customers,

and majority  Government owned, sought Government support for a ban on incandescent light bulbs. These traditional bulbs were commonly installed in homes until around the early 2000s, before LED lighting became the preferred standard.

While the New Zealand Government considered banning the sale of incandescent bulbs back in 2008, a change in Government meant those plans were never implemented. Today, however, many countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and much of Western Europe have already banned the manufacture or sale of incandescent bulbs.

As a result, these older bulbs are becoming increasingly difficult to purchase and are often more expensive than modern alternatives.

Why More Homeowners Are Switching to LED

Upgrading to LED downlights offers a number of advantages for homeowners:

• Lower electricity consumption, helping reduce ongoing power costs.

• LED lights typically last at least ten times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

• Most existing residential round downlights can be upgraded with minimal disruption.

• LED downlights generate significantly less heat. Estimates suggest older incandescent downlights can contribute to heat loss through ceiling cavities, particularly during winter.

Ready to Upgrade?

AB Electrical has been helping homeowners upgrade to energy-efficient LED lighting for many years. If you're still using older incandescent downlights, now is a great time to consider making the switch.

Modern LED lighting provides brighter, more efficient illumination, lower running costs and significantly longer life than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Once incandescent bulbs are banned from sale, we may see the price of LED down lights increase in price, so it may be best to  consider upgrading and modernising your home before a ban comes into effect.
