5 Facts you didn’t know about LED Lighting

LED bulbs are energy efficient and designed to last for many years, but here are a few lesser-known features to consider when weighing a jump to LEDs

1. LED’s can last for Decades - LED's can have a useful lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. So if you left your LED switched on for seven hours a day, 365 days a year, it can last for nearly 20 years before you need to replace it.

2. Led’s reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions - If every New Zealand household installed led lighting, we’d avoid 82,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year – the emissions of almost 34,000 petrol cars.

3. LED's can help keep you Cooler - LED's emit less heat than incandescent light bulbs, so when it's the height of summer and you're looking for ways to stay cool, you'll be grateful for your LED lights. The cooling factor of LED's reflect their efficient design: LED's direct most of the electricity into lighting rather than heat, unlike other lighting technologies.

4. LED’s don’t attract as many Bugs –  According to a research study, by far the worst option for outdoor lighting was traditional incandescent bulbs, while the best (and least appealing to insects) was a warm coloured LED light - those are the LEDs that produce a yellow/orange hue, rather than cool blue light.

The study found that LEDs attract significantly fewer insects.

Why?

Insects are attracted to UV light. LEDs convert electrical energy almost entirely into visible light(400-700 nm wavelength). Little energy is wasted into the production of invisible light like UV and infrared.

LEDs also do not produce a lot of heat as opposed to incandescent bulbs.

These two factors make LEDs attract fewer insects than the rest. However, scientists found no difference between warm- and cool-white LEDs.

5. For recessed downlights, it’s best to replace the whole fitting rather than just the bulb.
