Daylight Savings Has Ended – Time to Check Your Smoke Alarms

10 April 2026

Now that daylight saving has ended and the nights are getting cooler and darker, it’s a timely reminder to check your smoke alarms and make sure they are working properly as we head into the winter months.

A Simple Check That Could Save Lives

Working smoke alarms are one of the most important safety features in your home. Taking a few minutes to test them now can make all the difference in an emergency.

We recommend you:

  • Test each alarm
  • Replace batteries if needed
  • Check expiry dates on older units

Updated Smoke Alarm Regulations

All new build homes and dwellings undergoing major renovations must now comply with updated regulations.

This includes:
• Installing interconnected smoke alarms
• Having a smoke alarm in every bedroom, not just hallways

This is a significant safety improvement. When one alarm is triggered, all alarms in the home will sound, ensuring everyone is alerted and giving valuable extra time to respond.

Most systems are now wireless, making installation simple without the need for additional wiring.

While existing homes are not required to upgrade, many homeowners are choosing to install interconnected systems for added safety and peace of mind.

Thinking About Upgrading?

Interconnected smoke alarms provide an added level of protection. When one alarm is triggered, all alarms in the home sound, giving everyone an earlier warning.

These systems are now required in new builds and major renovations consented after November 2023, and are becoming increasingly popular in existing homes.

We can provide free, no-obligation advice and quotes if you are considering upgrading your system.
