EV Market Surge: Affordable Green Loans, Free Charging, and Cost Savings Explained

4 February 2025

The Electric Vehicle (EV) market is experiencing a surge, with sales volumes significantly increasing. Dealers are currently offering attractive discounts, while banks provide 'green loans' for EV chargers, vehicles, and heat pumps at rates as low as 1%.

EV technology has advanced significantly, with most vehicles now offering a range exceeding 400km, enabling drivers to go multiple days between charges. Combined with substantial savings on running costs, the transition to an EV has become financially appealing.

Electricity companies are also incentivising EV ownership by offering free or heavily discounted electricity (up to 50%) during off-peak hours. Some retailers provide three hours of free electricity, typically enough for daily charging needs. By setting a start time and desired charge percentage for your EV, you can ensure efficient and cost-effective home charging. With three hours of free charging, drivers can add between 120km to 150km of range, often eliminating electricity costs entirely.

A cost comparison between petrol and electric vehicles underscores the growing savings of EVs, particularly for those driving longer daily distances.

EV versus Petrol

Key assumptions used in the comparison include:

  • RUC (Road User Charges) for EVs at $0.076 per km
  • Charging during free electricity windows
  • Petrol vehicle consumption at 10L per 100km
  • Petrol priced at $2.80 per litre

These factors make EVs a compelling choice, especially when charged during discounted or free electricity periods.
