Interconnected Smoke Alarms - Improving Fire Safety in NZ Homes

10 September 2026

Recent tragic house fires across New Zealand are a sobering reminder of just how important early warning can be when a fire starts in the home.

Changes to New Zealand's Building Code have strengthened residential fire safety requirements, with interconnected smoke alarms now required in new homes and homes undergoing significant renovations, which would usually require building consent.

What Are Interconnected Smoke Alarms?

Unlike individual standalone smoke alarms, interconnected alarms communicate with each other throughout the home.

If one smoke alarm detects a fire, all of the interconnected smoke alarms sound - helping alert everyone in the house, even if the fire starts some distance from where they are sleeping or spending time.

Those additional seconds can be extremely important when it comes to getting everyone safely out of the home.

Not Building or Renovating? You Can Still Upgrade

While the new requirements apply to new homes and significant renovations, you don't have to be building or renovating to benefit from interconnected smoke alarms.

AB Electrical is seeing growing interest from Auckland families choosing to upgrade their existing home smoke alarm systems simply because they want the additional protection interconnected alarms can provide.

Wireless technology means interconnected smoke alarms can also provide a practical solution for many existing homes.

Professional Smoke Alarm Installation

AB Electrical can supply, install and configure wireless interconnected smoke alarms, ensuring the system is correctly set up throughout your home.

The smoke alarms we install meet the applicable New Zealand requirements and include the required long-life battery technology.*

If you'd like to find out whether interconnected smoke alarms could be a good option for your home, give Clynt or Howard a call.
