EV Momentum Continues to Grow

Electric vehicle adoption continues to gain momentum across New Zealand as more homeowners and businesses make the switch from petrol to electric.

With ongoing concerns around current and future fuel prices, many Kiwis are recognising the long-term savings and convenience that EV ownership can offer.

One of the biggest barriers in the early days of electric vehicles was range anxiety. Today, that concern has largely disappeared, with many modern EVs now offering driving ranges comparable to or exceeding traditional petrol vehicles.

The latest vehicle registration figures highlight just how quickly the market is changing.

Tesla dominated EV sales in May, with the Tesla Model Y recording almost three times as many sales as the second most popular electric vehicle.

In New Zealand, one in four buyers of new vehicles chose an EV during May, demonstrating growing confidence in electric transport.

Across the Tasman, the trend is even more pronounced. The Tesla Model Y became the number one selling vehicle in Australia, marking the first time an electric vehicle has outsold long-time favourites such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Toyota RAV4.

When hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are included, almost half of all new vehicle sales in Australia now feature some form of electric drive technology.

For most EV owners, charging at home is where the real savings begin.
