Time to Switch – Moving from Copper to Fibre Internet

5 September 2025

New Zealand now has a world-class fibre internet network, and for most households it’s become the standard for both internet and landline phone services. Fibre has already replaced much of the ageing copper network we relied on for decades.

But did you know there are still around 100,000 homes and businesses using copper-based services? While most are in rural and remote areas, some Auckland homes are still on copper too.

Why is copper being phased out?

In August, the Government announced plans to accelerate the removal of copper-based services. This means if you’re still connected through copper, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need to make the switch.

Why is fibre the smart choice?

Fibre is faster, more reliable, and designed to handle the way we use technology today. For most households, moving to fibre involves:

  • A new fibre connection directly to your home (usually at no cost to the homeowner)
  • A new modem
  • In some cases, digital phones to replace older models

The result? Better internet speeds, clearer calls, and a future-proof connection.
