Heat Pumps In Summer

The Number One Mistake People Make with Heat Pumps in Summer

1 February 2021

In the summer, a heat pump can act as air conditioning to provide cool air inside your home or office.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  In Cool mode, they remove heat and humidity from the indoor air.  As the heat pump gives off cool air, it moves towards the warm areas.  Eventually, the entire area becomes cool.

However, this process takes some time. Many homeowners make mistakes that can cost money and decrease comfort by using alternative techniques, and the number one mistake they make is opening windows to cool the room faster.

The theory behind leaving the windows open is that the heat pump will cool the room and the windows will let in the fresh air.  But this cannot be further away from the truth.

We advise that you follow these tips if you are going to use a heat pump in cool mode over the summer:

  • Cool one room
  • Shut doors and windows
  • Make sure warm air can’t get in

You need to keep the cool air inside the room and keep the temperature moderate.  If you leave the windows open, you will put stress on the heat pump, making it work harder–which will increase your power bill or cause your heat pump to become faulty prematurely.  An open window is just letting warm air back inside, defeating the purpose of the heat pump’s cooling mode.

We recommend you set the temperature to between 20-22c in cool mode.  By doing this, the heat pump gives off cool air.  The thermostat will constantly keep a check on the room temperature.  Once the room temperature reaches your desired temperature, the heat pump will turn itself off.  When it gets hot, it will turn on again–this gives you a consistent temperature to enjoy.
